Mark won a professional makeover for his heirloom "secretary" and a trip for two to a behind-the-scenes day with the cast and crew of the popular TV home improvement show "This Old House®." Mark's burled hardwood secretary has been in his family since 1902, originally given to his great-great-grandfather by his wife as a wedding gift. In 1927, their house burned to the ground, and it was the only piece they were able to save. Despite all it's been through, the piece was still structurally sound.

"I am the 5th generation to own this piece and it is my prized possession. Please help me preserve it to pass on to my son one day!" We couldn't be happier to make Mark's wish come true.

Mark's hardwood secretary was the ideal choice for a makeover. Despite its age and years of sun damage, it was still in relatively good condition. So it didn't take much to restore the piece and bring it back in full glory.

The first step was to strip the piece of its old finish and give it a thorough sanding. When it came time to stain, we were able to re-create the original color through a custom mix of two Minwax® Wood Finish™ colors, Jacobean and Red Mahogany. The last step was three coats of Minwax® Fast-Drying Polyurethane in a semi-gloss sheen to protect the wood for long lasting beauty.

The end result: a truly remarkable makeover, worthy of a piece as grand and elegant as Mark's heirloom secretary.
