Q: What is Minwax® Water Based Wipe-On Poly?

It's easily applied with a cloth, so there's no need to worry about drips or brush marks. Because it's water based, it has little odor, dries quickly and cleans up easily with warm water.

Q: Where can I use Water Based Wipe-On Poly?

Water Based Wipe-On Poly is an ideal choice for any interior project, especially furniture, railings and trim. Water Based Wipe-On Poly can be used to touch up small scratches on floors, but is not recommended for general use on floors. To protect floors, use Minwax® Water Based Polyurethane For Floors.

Q: How many coats do I need to apply?

Three coats are recommended.

Q: Can I apply Water Based Wipe-On Poly over the traditional Minwax® Wipe-On Poly oil-based finish or vice versa?

A. Yes. The two products can be applied over each other as long as the first has fully cured. Follow the directions for the product you are using. Be sure to apply each coat with only one product. Do not finish part of a surface with one topcoat and part with the other as this could result in an uneven appearance across the surface of the wood.

Q: What is the V.O.C. level of Water Based Wipe-On Poly?

Minwax® Water Based Wipe-On Poly has a maximum V.O.C. of 275 g/L. It can be sold throughout the U.S. with no restrictions.

Directions

WARNING! Removal of old paint by sanding, scraping or other means may generate dust or fumes that contain lead. Exposure to lead dust or fumes may cause brain damage or other adverse health effects, especially in children or pregnant women. Controlling exposure to lead or other hazardous substances requires the use of proper protective equipment such as a properly fitted respirator (NIOSH approved) and proper containment and cleanup. For more information, call the National Lead Information Center at 1-800-424-LEAD (in US) or contact your local health authority.

  1. Surface must be dry and free of old finishes in poor condition, paint, wax, grease, polish, dirt or other foreign matter.
  2. Sand to obtain a smooth uniform surface. Do not use steel wool. Remove all dust with a damp cloth.
  3. If desired, apply stain, such as Minwax® Wood Finish™, following the label directions for application instructions and dry times.
  4. Shake Water Based Wipe-On Poly container thoroughly before use.
  5. Put liberal amount Water Based Wipe-On Poly on a clean, soft, lint-free cloth and rub into the wood.
  6. Allow to dry at least 2-3 hours. Sand entire surface lightly with fine sandpaper (220 grit). Remove all sanding dust.
  7. Apply a second coat in the same manner as the first. A third coat is recommended. Repeat Step 6 before application.
  8. Allow final coat to dry 24 hours before normal use.

Floors: Water Based Wipe-On Poly may be used to touch up small scratches on floors. Apply carefully as gloss level may not be identical to existing floor finish.

Note: Water Based Wipe-On Poly is not recommended for general use on floors. To protect floors, use Minwax® Water Based Polyurethane for Floors or Minwax® Super Fast-Drying Polyurethane for Floors.

Cleanup: For easy cleanup, use warm water.

Coverage: Approximately 125 sq. ft. per quart.
