STEP 1: SAND THE FLOOR

Whether you have a bare wood floor, or a wood floor that already has a finish on it, you will need to sand the floor to prepare it for finishing. Rent or purchase a floor sander. Follow the sander manufacturer’s directions to prepare your floor. If you have factory finished floors, please consult a flooring professional before using this product.

You will need to sand your floor down to bare wood if:

  • Your floor’s finish is cracking, peeling, or completely worn away in areas, or
  • Shellac, lacquer, wax, or products containing wax or stearates have been applied to the floor, or
  • If you want to make your existing floor a lighter color.

You can do a “screen and recoat” if:

  • Your existing finish is in good condition, with no chipping, peeling, or worn through areas, and
  • Shellac, lacquer, wax, or products containing wax or stearates have not been applied to the floor.

For a “screen and recoat,” there is no need to remove your existing floor finish. Instead, you can simply “screen” the existing finish using a 150-180 grit screen to prepare it for the addition of a new finish.

For “Bare Wood,” If you have sanded the floor down to bare wood, or you have a new, unfinished wood floor, sand and prepare the floor following the sander manufacturer’s directions, ending with 100 grit sandpaper or equivalent. Then dampen the bare floor with water, allow to dry and then screen with a 320 grit maroon pad. Remove all sanding dust.

Then for all floors, after sanding remove all sanding dust. Thoroughly vacuum and wipe the wood with a clean, damp cloth to remove any remaining dust. Allow the wood to dry completely.

STEP 2: APPLY MINWAX® COMPLETE 1-STEP FLOOR FINISH

  • Thoroughly stir Minwax® Complete 1-Step Floor Finish using a stir stick for at least one minute before application . DO NOT SHAKE. Product should be at room temperature for best results.
  • Always test product on an inconspicuous area of the floor to verify the desired color. The existing color of your floor will determine the color of the final finish.
  • Use a new synthetic painter’s pad. Wet the pad evenly with Complete 1-Step Floor Finish.
  • Apply an even coat following the length of the floor boards in the direction of the wood grain. Do not stop in between boards. For best results, apply from one end of the room to the other.
  • Maintain a wet edge and avoid leaving dry spots while applying the finish.
  • Allow the finish to dry for at least two hours, but less than 24 hours. If this timing is followed, no sanding between coats is needed.
  • Note: If the finish dries for more than 24 hours, sand the finish lightly with a 320 grit maroon pad. Excessive sanding will remove color from the floor.
  • Surface must be free of dust before applying second coat. Apply a second coat following the steps above.
  • For bare wood, a third coat is recommended. Additional coats will produce a deeper color.

Note: Floor will bear light foot traffic in 24 hours. Avoid heavy traffic, and do not install rugs or clean floors for seven days. When replacing furniture, do not slide.

Clean Up: Clean application tools with soap and warm water immediately after use.

Note: Above dry times and coverage rates are based on good ventilation, temperature of 77ºF and 50% relative humidity. Lack of ventilation or application of thick coats may extend dry time. Do not use steel wool with this product.

Coverage: Approximately 500 square feet per gallon.

Storage: Store at room temperature. Keep from freezing.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Minwax® Complete 1-Step Floor Finish?

Minwax® Complete is a two-in-one stain and protective finish that provides superior durability for hardwood floors. It can be used over bare floors or previously finished floors.

What are the advantages of using Minwax® Complete 1-Step Floor Finish?

Minwax® Complete saves time compared to staining with one product and protecting with another. Minwax® Complete can be used over bare wood. It can also be used over an existing polyurethane finish; over a properly prepared floor, this product allows you to change the color of your floor without sanding down to bare wood. It lets you finish your floor in one day, does not require sanding between coats, and cleans up easily with soap and water.

What will Minwax® Complete 1-Step Floor Finish look like on my floor?

All wood reacts to stains differently due to its natural color and pore size, and these characteristics will affect the final look of your floor. Be sure to test the color on a hidden spot, such as in a closet, to see how the new finish will look on the floor. If you are applying it over an existing finish, the result will be a combination of the old and new colors.

Should Minwax® Complete 1-Step Floor Finish be sanded in between coats?

No sanding is required between coats as long as less than 24 hours have passed since the previous coat was applied. If Minwax® Complete has been allowed to dry for 24 hours or more, a light sanding between coats is required. Do not sand excessively, otherwise you risk removing a layer of color, which is mixed with the protective finish, from the floor.

Can Minwax® Complete 1-Step Floor Finish be applied over an existing finish?

Yes, as long as products containing shellac, lacquer, wax or stearates have not been applied to the floor and the existing finish is in good condition with no chipping, peeling or worn through areas. If these conditions are met, then you can lightly sand the existing finish using a 150-180 grit screen to prepare it for the addition of Minwax® Complete. However, if you want to lighten the color of your existing floor, you will need to remove the existing finish before applying Minwax® Complete.

What is the best way to apply Minwax® Complete 1-Step Floor Finish?

Use a synthetic painter’s pad. Make sure to wet it evenly with Minwax® Complete. Apply an even coat following the entire length of the floor boards in the direction of the wood grain. Do not stop in between boards and always apply from one end of the room to the other. To prevent lap marks, make sure to maintain a wet edge. Do not allow one stroke of your finish to dry before applying the next.

Can Minwax® Complete Floor Finish be used over factory finished flooring?

If you have factory finished flooring, it’s best to consult a flooring professional before undertaking any floor finishing project.
