Note: Minwax® Ultra Fast-Drying Polyurethane for Floors should not be mixed with other Minwax® floor products including: Minwax® Super Fast-Drying Polyurethane for Floors and Minwax® Ultimate Floor Finish.

STEP 1: SAND THE FLOOR

Whether you have a bare wood floor, or a wood floor that already has a finish on it, you will need to sand the floor to prepare it for finishing. Rent or purchase a floor sander. Follow the sander manufacturer's directions to prepare your floor. If you have factory finished floors, please consult a flooring professional before using this product.

You will need to sand your floor down to bare wood if:

  • You'd like to change the color of your floor, or
  • Your floor's finish is cracking, peeling, or completely worn away in areas or
  • Shellac, lacquer, wax, or products containing wax or stearates have been applied to the floor.

You can do a “screen and recoat” if:

  • You do not want to change the color of your floor
  • Your existing finish is in good condition, with no chipping, peeling, or worn through areas, and
  • Shellac, lacquer, wax, or products containing wax or stearates have not been applied to the floor.

For a “screen and recoat,” there is no need to remove your existing floor finish. Instead, you can simply “screen” the existing finish to prepare it for the addition of new finish.

For all floors, follow the sander manufacturer's directions for your type of project. Remove all sanding dust. Thoroughly wipe the wood with a clean, damp cloth to remove any remaining dust. Allow the wood to dry completely.

STEP 2: APPLY MINWAX® WOOD FINISH™ STAIN (OPTIONAL)

If you have sanded the floor down to bare wood, or you have a new unfinished wood floor, and you'd like to add color to it, you can stain the floor. Sand and prepare the floor according to the sander manufacturer's directions, ending with 100 grit sandpaper or equivalent. Remove all dust. Apply Minwax® Wood Finish™ Stain following the directions on the Wood Finish™ Stain can. Wait 8-12 hours for the stain to dry, and then apply Minwax® Ultra Fast-Drying Polyurethane for Floors.

STEP 3: APPLY MINWAX® ULTRA FAST-DRYING POLYURETHANE FOR FLOORS

  • Before use, thoroughly stir Minwax® Ultra Fast-Drying Polyurethane for Floors to rotate the product from the bottom to the top of the can. Do not shake.
  • Product should be at room temperature for best results. The product will appear cloudy in the can, but dries clear.
  • Apply a thin coat using a new synthetic pad applicator. Maintain a wet edge to avoid lap marks.
  • Allow the finish to dry at least 2 hours, but less than 8 hours. If this timing is followed, no sanding between coats is needed! But if you have to let the finish dry for more than 8 hours, sand the finish lightly with 220 grit sandpaper. Do not scuff through to bare wood.
  • Apply a second coat following the steps above.

If you are applying Minwax® Ultra Fast-Drying Polyurethane for Floors to bare wood, apply a third coat, following the steps above. If this is a "screen and recoat", or if you are applying Minwax® Ultra Fast-Drying Polyurethane for Floors over stain, only two coats are required.

Note: Floor will bear light foot traffic in 24 hours. Avoid heavy traffic, and do not install rugs or clean floors for seven days. When replacing furniture, do not slide.

Clean Up: Clean application tools with soap and warm water immediately after use..

Note: Sanding is not required between coats, but for maximum smoothness, you can choose to sand before the final coat, using 220 grit sandpaper. Allow 2-3 hours dry time before you sand.

Note: Dry times and coverage rates are based on good ventilation, temperature of 77°F and 50% relative humidity. Lower temperature, higher humidity, lack of ventilation or application of thick coats may extend dry time. Do not use steel wool with this product.

Note: For bare floors made of white oak, apply Minwax® Sanding Sealer before applying Minwax® Ultra Fast-Drying Polyurethane for Floors. This seals the wood and presents a possible tannin reaction (discoloration). If Minwax® Sanding Sealer is used prior to Minwax® Ultra Fast-Drying Polyurethane for Floors apply following label directions. Wait a minimum of two hours before sanding, and apply two coats of Minwax® Ultra Fast-Drying Polyurethane for Floors.

Coverage: Approximately 500 square feet per gallon.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between Minwax® Ultra Fast-Drying Polyurethane for Floors (275 V.O.C.) and general purpose protective finishes like Minwax® Fast-Drying Polyurethane and Minwax® Water Based Oil-Modified Polyurethane?

Minwax® Ultra Fast-Drying Polyurethane for Floors is a clear, water-based, durable protective finish specifically formulated for use on hardwood floors. Its professional formula provides superior durability. Its optimized drying technology provides a fast recoat time, and does not require sanding between coats. It applies more easily than regular polyurethanes on floor surfaces, with an advanced anti-settling formula that needs less stirring and has fewer “highs and lows”, resulting in an even sheen across the floor.

Should Ultra Fast-Drying Polyurethane for Floors be sanded between coats?

While not necessary, Ultra Fast-Drying Polyurethane for Floors can be sanded between coats for maximum smoothness. Allow the finish to dry 2-3 hours before sanding. A light sanding between coats is necessary only if Ultra Fast-Drying Polyurethane for Floors has been allowed to dry for 8 hours or more.

Can Ultra Fast-Drying Polyurethane be used over Minwax® stains?

Yes, Ultra Fast-Drying Polyurethane for Floors has been formulated to work within the Minwax® system. When staining floors, we recommend Minwax® Wood Finish™ stain.

Can Ultra Fast-Drying Polyurethane for Floors be used with Minwax® Professional Formula Sanding Sealer?

Yes. If the floor is bare wood, and is not going to be stained, Minwax® Professional Formula Sanding Sealer can be used as a first coat under Ultra Fast-Drying Polyurethane for Floors. First, the Sanding Sealer should be applied according to label directions. After the Sanding Sealer has dried, it must be sanded. Then Ultra Fast-Drying Polyurethane for Floors can be applied.

Ultra Fast-Drying Polyurethane for Floors appears cloudy in the can. Will this be how it looks on the floor?

No. Ultra Fast-Drying Polyurethane for Floors will dry beautifully, leaving a light amber tone on the wood.

Ultra Fast-Drying Polyurethane for Floors is a water-based formula. Does it provide the same durability and protection as the oil-based Super Fast-Drying Polyurethane for Floors?

Yes. You'll receive the same long-lasting beauty and protection with Ultra Fast-Drying Polyurethane for Floors as you have for years with Super Fast-Drying Polyurethane for Floors.

Does Ultra Fast-Drying Polyurethane for Floors amber naturally like Super Fast-Drying Polyurethane for Floors?

Ultra Fast-Drying Polyurethane for Floors adds a slight amber tone to the floor, but not as deep a color as Super Fast-Drying Polyurethane for Floors does. For Floors where a crystal clear, non-ambering finish is desired, use Minwax® Ultimate Floor Finish. It is ideal for use over light and gray stains, such as Minwax® Wood Finish™ Weathered Oak and Classic Gray, as well as over very light colored woods such as maple.

Can Ultra Fast-Drying Polyurethane for Floors be mixed with Super Fast-Drying Polyurethane for Floors?

No. Ultra Fast-Drying Polyurethane for Floors is a water-based formula and Super Fast-Drying Polyurethane for Floors is oil-based. The two products are not compatible and they should not be mixed together.

Can Ultra Fast-Drying Polyurethane for Floors be applied over Super Fast-Drying Polyurethane for Floors or vice versa?

Yes. The two products can be applied over each other as long as the first has fully cured. Follow the directions for the product you are using. Be sure to apply each coat with only one product. Do not finish part of a surface with one topcoat and part with the other as this could result in an uneven appearance across the surface of the wood floor.
