Q: What is the benefit of using Water Based Wipe-On Poly versus a traditional polyurethane?

Water Based Wipe-On Poly is easily applied with a cloth, without any drips or brush marks. It is the perfect choice for furniture, interior doors, trim and other woodwork. Because it’s water based it has little odor, dries quickly and cleans up easily with warm water.

Q. Can Water Based Wipe-On Poly be used on floors?

Water Based Wipe-On Poly provides a durable layer of protection but it is thinner than regular polyurethanes. It can be used on floors to touch up small areas that are worn or scratched. For new floors or floors that need to be refinished, Minwax® Fast-Dry Polyurethane, Minwax® Water Based Polyurethane For Floors or Minwax® Water Based Polyurethane should be used.

Q: How is Water Based Wipe-On Poly applied?

Water Based Wipe-On Poly is easily applied by hand, using a soft, lint-free cloth. Put a liberal amount on a clean cloth and rub into the wood. Since it is applied with a cloth, there is no need to worry about drips or brush marks.

Q: Can Water Based Wipe-On Poly be applied over Minwax® Wood Finish™ or other stains?

Yes. Water Based Wipe-On Poly is a great way to protect stained wood. Be sure to allow the stain to dry completely before top coating with Water Based Wipe-On Poly.

Q: Should Water Based Wipe-On Poly be sanded between coats?

Yes. A light sanding with very fine sandpaper (#220) will remove any fine particles of dust that may have settled on the finish while it was wet. Do not use steel wool. Since steel wool and water can cause rust, steel wool should be avoided around all water-based wood finishing products.

Q: Can I apply Water Based Wipe-On Poly over the traditional Minwax® Wipe-On Poly oil-based finish or vice versa?

Yes. The two products can be applied over each other as long as the first has fully cured. Follow the directions for the product you are using. Be sure to apply each coat with only one product. Do not finish part of a surface with one topcoat and part with the other as this could result in an uneven appearance across the surface of the wood.

Q: What is the V.O.C. level of Water Based Wipe-On Poly?

Minwax® Water Based Wipe-On Poly has a maximum V.O.C. of 275 g/L.

WARNING! Removal of old paint by sanding, scraping or other means may generate dust or fumes that contain lead. Exposure to lead dust or fumes may cause brain damage or other adverse health effects, especially in children or pregnant women. Controlling exposure to lead or other hazardous substances requires the use of proper protective equipment such as a properly fitted respirator (NIOSH approved) and proper containment and cleanup. For more information, call the National Lead Information Center at 1-800-424-LEAD (in US) or contact your local health authority.
