Giving kitchen cabinets a shot of color turns dull into beautiful

When the only thing wrong with a kitchen is the color of the cabinets, that’s cause for rejoicing. It means that the cabinets are of good quality and that the overall layout works just fine so there will be no need to undertake a total – and totally expensive – remodel. In this kitchen, the color challenge was solved without draining the savings account. Fortunately, the homeowners were happy with the kitchen layout and appliances. The maple cabinets were well-built, but the owners wanted to change the bland whitewashed look to warmer tones in pastel hues.

After the old finish was removed, the cabinets were sanded and given an application of Minwax® Water Based Pre-Stain Wood Conditioner. Next, Minwax® Water Based Stains were applied. For the cupboards, Parchment was chosen for its soft warm tone… For the base cabinets, Driftwood was used for its deeper greenish-gray color. The next step, topcoating, was done with Minwax® Polycrylic™ Protective Finish in a semi-gloss sheen. To complete the kitchen makeover, the butcher-block countertops got an extra measure of beauty and protection from two coats of Minwax® Helmsman® Spar Urethane.
