How to Select a Wood Finishing Brush

Foam brushes are great for laying down a coat of oil-based or water-based stain, but they are not the best for putting on a smooth clear finish. The heads contain air, which translates into bubbles that you do not want in your final finish. Also, the blunt edges will leave ridges that you will feel in the dried finish.Bristle brushes are going to be better for applying a finish. Make sure the bristles are firmly attached to the handle to prevent from falling off into your finish as you apply. When using a water-based finish or water-based stain, always use a synthetic bristle brush. For oil-based products, use a synthetic or natural bristle brush. When applying the finish, regardless of whether it is an oil-based finish or a water-based finish, only dip about ¾ of an inch of the bristles into the product to prevent runs and drips. Remember that it is always better to put on two to three thin coats of finish than one heavy coat that ends up chipping or cracking.
