Stain Vertical Surfaces with Minwax® Gel Stain

Uploaded

Wood finishing expert Bruce Johnson is here to help you complete your next wood finishing project. In this edition of Just Ask Bruce, he demonstrates how to stain a vertical surface, such as your front door, without letting the stain drip.

Bruce recommends using Minwax® Gel Stain for vertical wood, metal, or fiberglass projects. Its unique non-drip formula makes application easy for vertical surfaces.

Be sure to wipe off the dust after the final sanding. Then apply a coat of Minwax® Pre-Stain Wood Conditioner according to label directions. Before applying the Gel Stain, thoroughly stir the stain. Gel Stain can be applied with either a natural bristle brush or a lint-free cloth. Bruce recommends starting on a flat surface towards the outside of the door. Remember to always brush in the direction of the grain. Allow three minutes for the wood to absorb the stain and then wipe off any excess stain with a rag. Allow the stain to dry 8 to 10 hours before applying additional coats, if desired. After the last coat of stain is applied, wait 24 hours before applying Minwax® Helmsman Spar Urethane, which will help protect the door from UV light, water, and temperature changes.
