Studying in Style
Organize and update a child’s study area with unfinished furniture
If your child’s study area is cluttered and disorganized, here’s a way to give it a much-needed upgrade. In just a few short steps, you can create a colorful, organized workspace. Start with a hardwood tabletop. For an inexpensive solution, try plywood with an oak veneer. Use two metal filing cabinets for the table’s base and some wood cubes for storage on the wall.
After a light sanding, prep all the wood using Minwax® Water Based Pre-Stain Wood Conditioner. It helps prevent streaking and blotching, ensuring a beautiful, even stain. Next, apply Minwax® Water Based Wood Stains in your choice of colors. The stain colors used here were Island Water and Burgundy for the cubes and Vermont Maple for the desktop. Then, add a topcoat of Minwax® Polycrylic™ Protective Finish for durability and sheen.
After everything has dried, hang your storage cubes on the wall using brackets. Make sure you screw the brackets into the wall studs. Finally, place your tabletop on the filing cabinets. The end result is a great, uncluttered workspace that makes hitting the books a breeze!
