How to Prepare Wood for Staining

Before staining, it's important to prepare the wood. Proper wood preparation will make the stain look better, and be much more effective. In this video, expert Bruce Johnson explains how to correctly prepare wood for staining. The first step is to fill gaps and imperfections, and then sand the wood evenly and in the direction of the grain. To prevent stain from getting blotched or being absorbed unevenly, apply Minwax® Pre-Stain Wood Conditioner. Use a brush and apply the wood conditioner liberally. Let the wood conditioner soak in, then wipe off excess. Make sure the wood conditioner agrees with the type of stain being used. For example, if using a water-based stain, use a water-based conditioner beforehand.
