Directions

Instructions for using Minwax® Wood Finish Water-Based Solid Color Stain.

1. Prep

  • Start with bare or stripped wood that’s clean and dry.
  • For best results, start with a medium grit sandpaper, and increase the grit as you go, finishing with #220 as final sand. Remove sanding dust.
  • Apply Minwax® Water-Based Pre-Stain Wood Conditioner – especially on soft woods – for best, even color.

2. Stain

  • Pre-test color on a hidden spot to make sure you like it.
  • Stir stain well before and occasionally during staining. Don’t shake or thin stain.
  • For best results, apply in the direction of the grain. Use a synthetic pad to remove excess stain, for control and even coverage.
  • Wipe away excess stain immediately (within 2 minutes) after application, working with the wood grain to blend lighter/darker areas.
  • If happy with color, let dry completely, then apply a protective topcoat. To intensify color, recoat in 1-2 hours and do NOT sand between coats.
  • Not recommended for large surfaces like floors due to fast dry time. Use Minwax® Wood Finish™ Penetrating Oil Stain for large projects.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is Wood Finish Color Stain Solid different than the Wood Finish Color Stain Semi-Transparent?

They are similar in that they are both 5x thicker than traditional stains for easier application control and less mess. They are both available in three grab-&-go colors, and are both tintable to 200+ colors. What is different is how opaque they are. Semi-Transparent stain allows you to add color to your wood surface, while highlighting beautiful wood grain. Solid Stain offers a more opaque finish that hides more wood grain, but maintains the natural texture of real wood. Solid Stain will give you a more even, consistent color across the entire surface.

The label says to use a synthetic pad for this stain. How does that work?

For best results, we recommend using a high quality synthetic brush to apply a liberal coat of Solid Stain. Within three minutes of applying, use a synthetic pad (similar to those used for paint; not a "stain pad") to remove the excess stain, moving with the direction of the grain. This application method will mitigate differences in pressure and give the most even color.

I really like the Bombay Mahogany color in Minwax® Gel Stain, but I don’t see it anywhere else, and I don’t want to use Gel Stain. Can I have it tinted in Wood Finish Color Stain?

Yes! You can tint any Minwax color in Wood Finish Color Stain!
