How To: Tips & Techniques
Do I Need a Pre-Stain Wood Conditioner?
When it comes to using a Pre-Stain Wood Conditioner, the rule is easy: when in doubt, use it. All woods are unpredictable when you stain them. To avoid a case of blotchiness, first brush on a coat of Pre-Stain Wood Conditioner.
Make Repairs Look Natural
To duplicate the grain pattern of real wood, let your Stainable Wood Filler harden, sand it smooth, then use the tip of a utility knife to score tiny lines in it before you apply your stain.
Pre-Treat End Grains
Apply a second coat of Minwax® Pre-Stain Wood Conditioner to the large, open pores at the ends of the boards to prevent them from turning darker than the remainder of your project. Do the same for any knots in the wood.
